Summer Reading Begins June 9th, 2014

DID YOU KNOW …

· When kids choose their own books and read just for fun, their reading ability increases more than if they read assigned books.

· By the sixth grade, kids who read every summer are ahead of kids who don’t read by two grade levels!
· Just four or five books read over the summer may prevent losing reading skills between school years.
· IFPL’s Summer Reading Program is designed to make reading through the whole summer as fun and easy as possible!

HOW THE PROGRAM WORKS
1. Visit the library to sign up & receive your reading log.
2. Kids and parents work together to make a weekly reading goal.  Any goal works:  minutes a day … minutes a week … books a week … pages … chapters … it’s all up to you!
3. Kids can be read to, can read independently, or both!
4. Kids can read whatever books they choose, regardless of reading level or age: picture books, nonfiction, graphic novels, chapter books — anything goes!
5. Kids earn both Reading Rewards (coupons for treats and activities from area businesses) and Book Bucks (for purchasing rewards from our Summer Reading Store).
6. Kids can read and earn prizes for up to ten weeks—the longer kids are in the program, the bigger the rewards!  And if you miss a week, it’s fine!  Just pick up where you left off!
7. Kids don’t need to return every week to the library to participate.  Just keep reading and kids will receive all the rewards they earned since your last visit!
